TREASURE at the symposium in Vienna

The TREASURE project took center stage during the symposium Seasonal Large-Scale Heat Storage Systems – Key Technology for Grid-Connected Heat Supply, held on November 29, 2024, at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. Organized by AEE INTEC and Wien Energie, the event brought together more than 100 experts from research, industry, and politics to discuss innovative technologies, pilot projects, and necessary frameworks for sustainable district heating.

Attendees explored key Austrian initiatives, such as ScaleUp (underground tank storage) and ATES Vienna (aquifer storage), alongside international advancements like TREASURE’s Horizon Europe-funded project. TREASURE highlighted its seven underground storage demonstrations, contributing critical insights into practical implementation and the future of sustainable energy storage.

Key outcomes from the event included:

  • Enormous Potential: Experts identified the need for tens of thousands of large-scale heat storage systems to support Europe’s district heating goals by 2050.

  • Pilot Projects as a Foundation: Initial Austrian storage systems will undergo scientific monitoring to guide future deployments.

  • Policy Recommendations: Panelists emphasized faster approval processes, public-private partnerships, and investment subsidies exceeding 30% to accelerate adoption.

  • Austria’s Leadership Role: Austria showcased its innovative companies, and technological and research excellence, strengthening its global competitiveness in the heat storage market.

  • Vienna’s Milestone: The construction of Vienna’s first underground large-scale heat storage system, set to begin in 2027.

TREASURE remains committed to advancing cutting-edge storage technologies, ensuring Europe’s transition to a sustainable and decarbonized energy future!
