TREASURE is Advancing Sustainable Heating and Cooling Solutions

A recent study by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) highlights the significant contribution of traditional fossil fuel-based heating and cooling systems to air pollution within the EU. According to the JRC report, these systems account for approximately 73% of particulate matter emissions, 33% of nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), 49% of sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and 61% of carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. In response to this trend and in alignment with the EU's climate goals, TREASURE aims to develop and demonstrate innovative, scalable solutions to transition towards more sustainable heating and cooling technologies.

TREASURE is focused on improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions through a range of technological advancements. These include ultra-efficient heat pumps utilizing renewable energy sources such as ambient heat, geothermal, and solar, designed to replace fossil fuel-based systems with zero direct emissions. The project also explores advanced waste heat recovery systems, capturing excess heat from industrial and urban environments, and innovative thermal storage technologies to enhance system efficiency. Furthermore, TREASURE is developing solutions for PTES district heating and cooling networks that integrate local renewable energy sources and digitalized energy management to optimize distribution, alongside building-integrated thermal solutions such as lightweight, high-efficiency thermal panels and flexible heat exchange systems.

The TREASURE project's research and demonstrations aim to reduce pollutant emissions, improve energy efficiency, and enhance energy security. By advancing industrial-scale production and ensuring the stability and longevity of large-area renewable heating and cooling technologies, the project supports the broader adoption of sustainable solutions. This contributes to the EU's climate objectives by demonstrating scalable renewable heating and cooling solutions, improving indoor and outdoor air quality, and reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports.

As the EU progresses towards its 2030 and 2050 climate objectives, projects like TREASURE contribute to the development of energy-efficient buildings and infrastructure across Europe.
